Really, the only reason I can find that you shouldn’t buy Demon’s Souls is that you need to have a PS5 first, so if you’re still trying to buy one, you may be waiting a month or four. It’s somewhat fitting that the game which started the “Souls” trend has now been remade, both opening and closing a particular chapter in gaming history. The big new feature to appreciate is photo mode, which can be used to capture some truly spectacular shots and highlights just how good this game looks.

I won’t spoil here but you can read about what has changed, if you want. There’s also a mysterious new door that players haven’t figured out, which could be something or nothing at all. I’ve spent well over 30 hours with this game and I’m sure I’ll be spending four times that on subsequent playthroughs in the months to come.

One of only two weapons occupying Demon’s Souls’ Very Large Swords category, the Dragon Bone Smasher is, as the name implies, a massive weapon forged with the intent of aiding in battle against dragons. With a strength requirement of 30 and B damage scaling in that stat, it’s an excellent mid-to-late game weapon for Strength builds. Ironically enough, it’s not all that useful against the Dragon God due to the puzzle-like design of the fight. Obtainable in area 4-1, as you can see in the above video by YouTube creator Ashen One, you only need to defeat the Phalanx boss from level 1-1 to gain access to this weapon. Then you should play through the second level in each archstone in the same order. You may want to save the challenging Valley of Defilement, the rightmost archstone, for last.

Again you will have a set of stairs to your left, this time with a Boletaria Soldier standing at the top. Don’t go up just yet, stick to the right, smash the barrels to loot an Unknown Warrior Soul. Keep going until the end of the corridor to loot Mail Breaker from another corpse. Don’t go up just yet, smash the crates in front of you to reveal some remains, examine them to loot x5 Firebomb. Pass the corner you will find two Boletaria Soldier, they are harder than Dreglings so take your time.

In a discussion about some of the greatest and most challenging games of all time, it goes without saying that FromSoftware’s offerings would definitely be a major part of this conversation. However, when talking about the Souls series, most people tend to talk about the Dark Souls trilogy without even mentioning the predecessor that provided the building blocks of the series — Demon’s Souls. Thankfully, this is not the case anymore — Bluepoint Games has done an excellent job of remaking the original Demon’s Souls on the PS3 to allow a new generation of gamers to enjoy this classic.

Fortunately, there’s a pretty clear indicator that shows when you’ve gone above 50% of your equip weight, which is where those chunky, sluggish rolls start. Level up your Endurance stat at the Maiden in Black if you want to equip heavier armor and weapons but still remain agile. After (most likely) dying at the hands of Vanguard, you will lose your “body form” and awaken in “soul form.” You’ll do so with half the health points you have in body form, which obviously makes things difficult. At the heart of most Souslike games is a trial and error component which rewards persistence and forces you to learn the language of every encounter in order to survive. It’s a better representation of the ways that the genre’s challenges so often come down to your ability to recognize and execute on an opportunity.

It’s possible some others will be canceled before ever being made public, of course, but the list is definitely legit. All those changes, and apparently some surprises, await players in Demon’s Souls when it comes to PlayStation 5 on the console’s launch day, Nov. 12. And despite requests from a portion of the audience for easier difficulty options (and a vocal contingent that would be upset by such a concession) there will be no difficulty setting in Demon’s Souls on PS5, Moore confirmed. gg88 will also have a vast number of visual improvements. The game’s kingdom of Boletaria is far more detailed than it was on PlayStation 3, and the game will feature two graphical settings. Moore pointed to other improvements that are inherent to the PlayStation 5, including fast loading times from the system’s SSD — “You no longer have to wait three minutes for the game to load after you’ve died,” he said.

Featuring a balanced weight-to-damage ratio, the Penetrating Sword’s great strength resides in its unique features as a medieval Demon’s Souls weapon, boasting unparalleled reach and high-damage thrusting attack. Another reason why this weapon is so strong is how easy it is to get. You can simply pick this weapon off a corpse near the Vanguard boss very early into your adventures, giving you an extremely powerful tool for dealing with the first few Demon’s Souls bosses.

Head down to find a body that you can loot to find a Blue-Eye Knight Helm. If you continue going up the slope, five more black phantom Dreglings will appear. Once you’ve defeated them, you’ll be able to loot the body the enemies were guarding to find x1 Renowned Warrior Soul. Once unlocked, it will stay unlocked even if World Tendency changes later. Also, the provided in-game tip videos are fantastic tools that give progressively more specific hints.

Now turn right, and you will face a Boletaria Soldier wielding a halberd. Going along the little staircase at your left, you can spot eight Dreglings hidden by some explosive barrels. Try to sneak up on them and use a Firebomb to reduce their numbers as much as possible.

And the expanded processing ability means games can focus on small details in a way that simply wasn’t possible before. To wit, Demon’s Souls is in love with the movement of tiny pieces of fabric or shreds of armor, or the way destructible environments can break. You’ve never seen a more lavish barrel-breaking simulator in your life. You’ve never seen a shirt move in the wind like this, not in a game. This pursuit of realism is an oddly modern invention, but one that’s come to dominate the medium. I first remember it around the release of the original Gears of War, on Xbox 360.
